Pubmed is flooding new research every month and we WILL have the answers, sooner or later.

Children with rickets (and low D levels) seem to be incredibly prone to respiratory infections and that may explain a bulk of skin hypothesis.

Tuohimaa's suggested optimal 25(OH)D (calcidiol) range may be rising, since his group has recently reported that calcidiol seems to be agonistic of VDR like calcitriol is. There might be some kind of compensatory mechanism.

On the other hand, Vieth (2009) seems to propose that seasonally stable 25(OH)D levels may be as important than getting the levels up to very often suggested 75-110 nmol/l.

Dr Frost, did you know that very recently it was found in Austria that 25(OH)D levels correlate very well with serum testosterone ? How would you possibly imlement that in your sexual selection theory, if this will be proven to be causal ?

I think it will, because a few prostate cancer studies (like Tuohimaa et al.), lots of sports performance studies with UVB radiation and mental outlook trials clearly suggest so.

I don't mean to bemean in any way with these comments - I just think it will be interesting what may be found out on interracial differences on D3 metabolism and even different functional Vit D forms that may not be present when D3 solely is supplemented.Neonomidehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00961709424324961929noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3734925856292601239.post-8213549442330267332010-01-13T07:45:19.998-05:002010-01-13T07:45:19.998-05:00Introduction of oral vitamin D supplementation and...Introduction of oral vitamin D supplementation and the rise of the allergy Pandemic .Published: 19 November 2009 Allergy, Asthma & Clinical Immunology 2009, 5:8

In a comment on this study it is stated "The contention that vitamin D deficiency causes rickets has been weakened by several recent studies that attribute development of the condition to hypophosphatemia.[6] Nigerian children with rickets have been cured by administration of calcium alone.[7] Bouillon et al. found that VDR null mice administered diets high in calcium and phosphorous did not develop rickets." Correlation isn't causation. Middl...Dear Anon,

Correlation isn't causation. Middle-class African Americans generally have better health outcomes than do lower-class African Americans (as is the case with any population). They also have a higher degree of white admixture (for various historical reasons) and thus have a vitamin-D metabolism closer to that of Euro-Americans. Together, these two factors would generate the apparent correlation between vitamin-D level and cardiac death risk among African Americans.

This is a general problem with the data put forward by vitamin-D enthusiasts: most of it is poorly controlled for ethnic/racial background, not to mention many other confounding variables.

It is important to control for ethnic/racial background because we know that many if not most darker-skinned populations have lower levels of vitamin D, even those that live in the tropical zone and are highly exposed to UVB. African Americans do not have lower vitamin D levels because they have dark skin and no longer live in the tropics. It's because their metabolism has adapted to a lower range of vitamin-D levels. Raising these levels artificially will probably do more good than harm.Peter Frostnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3734925856292601239.post-54211127065663312472010-01-07T16:08:16.713-05:002010-01-07T16:08:16.713-05:00http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2010/01/10010...http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2010/01/100105170924.htmAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
