I'll try to get in touch with them and find out what they're working on now.

Ben10,

The neotenization of the human face seems to have been a long-term trend. Stephen Gould thought it was a side-effect of selection for mental plasticity, i.e., learning used to be primarily an infant trait that has since been extended into adulthood. Konrad Lorenz thought a kind of domestication was responsible, i.e., just as we select for pets that look 'cute' there has been a kind of social/sexual selection for humans who look cute.

Symmaque,

SymmaqueAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3734925856292601239.post-46247785371414424542010-11-26T10:49:39.683-05:002010-11-26T10:49:39.683-05:00Congratulations for your book. Do you think that this attraction for light skin began with Homo sapiens or before?
I guess we can't know the sexual preferences of erectus or even australopithecines but what about higher primates like gorillas and chimps?
Selecting for neotenic characters for the reasons you said could have had the side effect to drive the encephalisation trend at the beginning of the homo genus, since the ratio brain/body is higher in infants than adults, even in chimps.
But in our own species, what about the simple hypothesis that adults select neoteny because if you look younger, you ARE younger, that is you are more alive than dead and indeed you live longer, and everybody likes to live.Ben10noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3734925856292601239.post-62320940180862991072010-11-23T15:31:05.721-05:002010-11-23T15:31:05.721-05:00I was recently looking at research about how we id...I was recently looking at research about how we identify male vs. female faces.

I'm not sure if Peter Frost participated in this study, but I found this article from the University of Montreal:

http://www.physorg.com/news162643749.html

Their finding is that, in general, male faces are "red" and female faces are "green."

If you actually do a histogram of any face, you'll see that the male ones have more red color and the female ones have more green color. Natural selection would have cleared the skin of the woman in order to increase its production of vitamin D and thus to provide enough calcium and phosphorus during pregnancy and lactation"

Some of the translation is very good, but some is not so good and I am guessing and perhaps missing nuance.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3734925856292601239.post-992150475743068162010-11-21T12:07:57.908-05:002010-11-21T12:07:57.908-05:00I put the first paragraph through a translator and...I put the first paragraph through a translator and it sounds very interesting ... can we have a translation?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
